The Gun Safety Teacher

I don't think it's a secret that Rene was very involved in making sure kids and adults alike in the Southeast corner were taught properly on how to handle firearms and the proper way to hunt.  My husband and I both were instructed by him in the Firearm Safety Course, along with our oldest son.  I can't even imagine how many kids and adults he taught over the years, but it has to be over 500 for sure.  I have lots of memories about Rene, as him and Mary were considered part of the Richaud family, but the one that sits most iin my mind is when I was 17 (1987).  I just completed the Firearm Safety Course under his and Chief Lester Ray's instruction.  All of us students gathered at Grant Gordon's farm for a wind-up party for that year's class for a wiener roast and do some target shooting.  I walked up to Rene and he hands me the gun and says to shoot at the target.  I said "I'm not shooting that gun."  He said "take the gun and shoot the target."  I chuckled and said "no".  He smiled and said "take the gun, make your shot and go."  I smiled and said, "Rene, the first thing you taught us in the course is to never accept a loaded gun from anyone!".  He made his signature smirk, had the twinkle in his eye, unloaded the gun, and handed me the gun and shell, and said "you always were a brat!"  We laughed, I loaded the gun and took my shot at the target.  Rene, you were an excellent teacher and taught so many of us to respect the wildlife, hunt safely, and go for a quick, clean kill.  You will be missed. <3
